Black Panther | The Style of Wakanda

Marvel’s blockbusting adventure Black Panther has achieved several historic triumphs: the highest-grossing film from a black director, the highest-grossing film with a black lead and the first ever black winner for the best costume design Oscar.

In partnership with Westfield, we produced an immersive evening and costume design panel moderated by Entertainment Weekly’s, Clarissa Cruz, with distinguished guests, award-winning costume designer, Ruth E. Carter, and Danai Gurira. Diving into the inspiration and process of creating the Afrofuturistic costumes of the Wakanda kingdom, guests learned how Carter and Hannah Beachler, the film’s production designer, both drew on very real tribes and cultures, such as beadwork inspired by the Turkana tribe in Kenya and neck rings worn by South African Ndebele, alongside contemporary African fashion designers to bring to life a world of nuance, reference, and fantasy.
